Unlike laser cutting machine, 3D printer operates in 3 axis so actual tangible object can be printed in 3D. Advantage of FDM machine is that no support material is needed for 30 degree wall, this allows to build encapsulated cells and make object hollow from inside. Disadvantage of DFM printer us that resolution and small parts details are sometime hard to get perfect without heavy post processing, Sometimes designer has to choose between more applicable prototyping methods. For example flat parts are always faster to fabricate with laser cutter, simple mechanical shapes are good for FDM printers, jewelry and fine details are better of with SLA and Jet printers.
